AFT Massachusetts Statement on Change of Leadership at Massachusetts Executive Office of Education

AFT Massachusetts Statement on Change of Leadership at Massachusetts Executive Office of Education (February 10, 2026)

AFT Massachusetts President Jessica Tang released the following statement in response to news that Massachusetts Secretary of Education, Dr. Patrick Tutwiler, is stepping down from his position and will be replaced by current Superintendent of Salem Public Schools Dr. Stephen Zrike:

“Over the last four years, Dr. Tutwiler has led the Executive Office of Education with infectious joy and energy, underscoring what we can accomplish when we have leaders focused on ensuring each student, each school, and each educator has the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. We deeply appreciate both his commitment to our public schools as well as collaborative and inclusive approach to leadership.

“Like Dr. Tutwiler, Dr. Stephen Zrike has spent decades working in public schools across the Commonwealth. We appreciate that Governor Healey is focused on filling this important position with leaders who have worked in our public schools and have a deep understanding of the public education system in Massachusetts.

“AFT Massachusetts educators and staff worked alongside Dr. Zrike during his years as a principal in the Boston Public Schools and then in Salem, where he has served as superintendent for nearly six years. Dr. Zrike has earned a strong reputation as a professional educator of the highest caliber who stays laser focused on the needs of students and families, while also respecting dedicated educators in the classroom.

“This change in leadership comes during a very challenging time in public education. At the federal level, public education is under assault, exacerbating the fiscal crises plaguing our cities and towns across the state. Children are afraid to go to school because of the chilling effects of immigration enforcement officers acting as if they’re above the law. We’re seeing an increase not only in the number of students needing services but the complexity of their needs. School districts are struggling to meet rising costs and our ability to provide the high-quality public education our students deserve is in jeopardy.

“We wish Pat the best in his future endeavors and hope to have the opportunity to work alongside him again. We congratulate Dr. Zrike and look forward to continuing our partnership with him in this new role.”
