Those opposed to unions have filed a suit, known as the Janus case, with the U.S. Supreme Court. They are claiming that agency fee in the public sector is a violation of the U.S. Constitution. The public sector unions in Washington, D.C. believe that the Court will rule in favor of those bringing the suit sometime in 2018. Consequently, non-members will not have to pay any dues even though they receive the benefits of the contract. This case is a major threat. Membership involvement in the Union has always been highly desirable, but more than ever it is urgent.
On October 28, AFT MA will have a leadership conference emphasizing methods to be used to mobilize membership involvement. See the enclosed flyer. We shall also highlight other salient issues. Please plan to join us!
